Have family in town and want to go out to the mountains. We enjoy shopping, looking at the views (but not feeling like hiking this week!), crafts, etc. Can you recommend some places for us? Thanks so much!

Downtown Asheville! Lots of cool shops, great restaurants... if you go on a Friday, there's a HUGE drum circle. Make sure to hit New Morning gallery, a short ways from downtown proper. Folk Art Center, the Parkway. Go down Wall St. for the shops & Laughing Seed restaurant... Haywood St. for more, especially Malaprop's Bookstore & The Chocolate Fetish (ohhh, the truffles! Dragon's Sigh - wasabi truffles?! Divine.) If you have the time & money, The Biltmore Estate is breathtaking, especially the gardens.

If you go to Blowing Rock the shops down town are fun. Take the drive from BR up 221 towards Grandfather Mt then take the parkway back down to BR. Very nice drive.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is full of some of the most beautiful views in the country. You don't have to do any hiking to see most of them. It's a beautiful drive between the Boone/ Blowing Rock area and Asheville.

You know, I had a guy in Jackson county. He had a little drum circle in his backyard. It turned into a drum circle four miles in diameter. You get a few hippies playing drums and next thing you know, you got yourself a colony.

If you go to Asheville, don't forget to go to the Biltmore Estate. Great historical tour and gardens. BILTMORE in Asheville, North Carolina, Americas Largest Home and More!

You can pretty much get the shopping and the views in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg as well.

There's a Tanger Outlet in Blowing Rock too. I always get suckered into that place!
