"Retreat rights" - in use at NC state universities - take up to a year off to prepare to return to teaching from having been an administrator. I could not believe the $$ amounts and the rationalizations!

I have always been aware of sabbaticals . . . which may or may not be paid. And some academicians go on sabbatical after being awarded a grant to study something in particular or do research.

These retreat rights are ridiculous and should be eliminated.

Tell us how you really feel! Heehee ... they do seem extravagant. One commenter asked how much time do you really need to prepare to co-teach one class? I think they do need a way to get folks who have been administrators current in their field, but it seems there'd be a much less expensive and less time consuming process.

Ani, did you ever have funding for the time it would take you to refresh old skills or perhaps learn new ones? Hmmm, me neither!

Wow, that's really something! It has been my experience that (at UNCC, at least) they are perfectly willing to put graduate teaching assistants making very low wages in charge of classrooms after giving them zero training or support...... so, it's interesting that they are willing to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into administrators just to "prepare them for the classroom."

I only caught part of the news about the new budget, but aside from taxing us to death and cutting from education, I noticed that UNC is getting some money. Didn't think they would need it as much as all the school districts. Silly me.
