Organic certification is a complicated, time-consuming and costly government process. Many smaller independent operations operate on a system of trust based on the relationship between the farmer and the consumer. Lots of opponents to chemical farming also oppose the formal certification process. I've been told by some smaller operations that the process just bogs them down in bureucracy and paperwork and the increased costs are burdensome. I don't know if this applies to Lakeside but I just wanted to note that the product could still be organic.
On another note, dairy costs are rising all over. The cost of milk has risen twice as much in the last year as the cost of gas. The rise is in part due to the rise in ethanol and farmers dealing with a lower profit yet rising costs to do business. Also, there is the continued drought in NZ and AU (the two largest global milk producers) which means higher demand for US milk but no increase in supply.

Thanks! I'm spoiled where I live with an incredible organic foods section in the local grocery store - and the prices are the same, if not lower than the local organic foods store. They even carry their own line of organics.
We don't have Whole Foods here, and I've never heard of Trader Joe's. I do know that when we stopped in a Whole Foods on a recent trip, the prices were much higher than we pay in the grocery store. Sounds like there are definitely a few options to check out.

Carolina-guy: which Harris Teeter do you mean, the one on Carmel & Quail hollow? We just moved to the area and have been using that one, but if you said "the best in the area," would love to know where it is...thanks!

Green grocers
There has been a green grocer in Charlotte for the past 20 years or so. They are called, Fresh Market and are located on Providence road @ the Strawberry Hill shopping center.
The Fresh Market, A Fine Neighborhood Specialty Grocer
Earth Fare is planned to anchor Grubb Properties mixed use 24acre site, Morrison located on the corner of Colony & Sharon roads, caddycornered to Morrocroft.
Adjacent to Morrison will be a 25-30 acre mixed use development lying on the plat of land currently occupied by the Colony Apartments, an outdated community for South Parks standards.
It is purported that a Whole Foods will anchor there
Whole Foods was supposed to anchor the future Grubb Properties Elizabeth Avenue district, but has since pulled oput of the development.
If you have time, take the virtual tour of the Elizabeth Avenue district, it is rather impressive and exciting to see if you live in the area!
