I am moving to the Charlotte area after being away for 3 years. I lived in Ballantyne Country Club and though my husband and I enjoyed some parts of it I found the people to be a little "over the top"....not friendly, etc. Currently we are looking there because I know the schools are good, but would like to find out more about Marvin, Waxhaw, Weddington. I have a child going into the 2nd grade and one in K. I have heard Meck county schools are not that good right now....how are Union County schools?
Please help!!!
Thank you so much!!!

South Charlotte schools are some of the best in the state - I wouldn't discount living there.

If you found the mindset of Ballantyne to be a bit contrary to your liking I'm not so sure the areas in Union county you mentioned are for you either - they are all very similar to Ballantyne.

My suggestion to you is to instead look to live somewhere along/near hwy 51 in south Charlotte - the commutes are better, the schools are great, the neighborhoods are established without new construction headaches to contend with. If you look for a home in the Providence Spring Elementary attendence zone in particular you'll be in a great area and fantastic school situation.

My office in Ballantyne and I live in Union County. We have 2 kids in Union schools right now, and 1 graduated last semester, and are very happy with the schools here. My kids loved Marvin Ridge and are now going to go to Cuthbertson, which is brand new. I'm not sure what you mean about people being "over the top". Maybe because of the higher price point in Ballantyne Country Club, people are somewhat "competitive" ? I guess you could find that in some subdivisions in Union, but we have found it very enjoyable living in Waxhaw. A couple of good web sites to research schools are: www.ncreportcards.org and www.greatschools.net . I'm not sure if your in town, but this weeks Union County Weekly has posted a schedule of Union Schools open houses, you can find it on-line.

Yes, S. Charlotte schools are the best if you want great education. I would say move away from the country club neighborhoods as they tend to have the stuffy over the top people. There are a lot of great neighborhoods w/ friendly families in that area (Prov. Plantation, Berkeley,Beverly Crest etc). They are a little older, but very nice neighborhoods.
Union County will mostly have a lot of transplants as it's mostly new construction in the nicer areas. But again, good schools but many of them are getting overcrowded due to the boom of moving out there a couple years ago.

This is somewhat true. We live in Waxhaw and spend most of our social time in Ballantyne. The neighborhoods here are not quite Ballantyne Country Club, however, it is not unusual to have some households who think they are one of the "rich" folks. It's few and far between though, but it can happen.

We love our community and the schools around here are incredible. They are all new and state of the art, and all rank very well. The Marvin/Waxhaw/Weddington area really is a great place to live. You're far from certain things so you have that "country/farm" feeling around, however, you're only minutes from Ballantyne, Blakney, and Stonecrest.

Can't be beat IMO.

Marvin is wonderful, so close to everything! How about Firethorne? Had a friend who used to live in Ballantyne CC move there and she says there is a world of difference. Much more relaxed. I have my kids in Marvin schools and love it. Marvin Ridge is also offering the International Baccalaureate program now.
