Black Mountain / Asheville area for the natural beauty and both are neat towns to hang out in.

I love coastal cities or cities by water I would say Charleston. I never been there and it on my to do list. History the beauty and I want to see what is grand about Edisto beach.

Seagrove, for the pottery. Or Pinehurst for a round of golf.

Me too, I've never been there but it's on to do list too.

I've been to the SC coast (Charleston, Myrtle Beach, IOP, etc.) and the NC Mountains and Foothills (Boone, Banner Elk, Linville, etc.) and a whole lot in between..and of course I love it all...but 3 places I really want to go to but haven't had a chance as of yet:

Old Salem (Winston-Salem, NC) http://www.oldsalem.org/
Mt. Airy, NC http://www.visitmayberry.com/
Greenville, SC

Wilmington, Cape Fear and Beaufort NC, but that it's more like a 3 to 4 hour drive. Those coastal cities have so much southern charm to them and I'm a sucker for those old 19th century picturesque homes.
Charleston and SummerVille is another weekend trip I take in the summer.

As much as you know I LOVE the mountains, save that trip for the heat for the summer. I too recommend Charleston for this weekend. You can be there in an easy 3 hours and you would enjoy it so much more in spring weather than in the heat of summer. Walk the streets, soak in the history and wonderful architecture and then take your pick of some of the most scrumptous meals to be had all over the place. Personally I like Slightly North of Broad - go for the crab cakes! yum

Most drives 2 to 3 hours from Charlotte can get you to the mountains, but the coast is definitely a little further. To get to Myrtle Beach, SC, its 4 to 5 hours.
