Hi,

I am new to these forums and very grateful for all the comments and insights on North Carolina. I am dying to come and live in your wonderful state -- I just vacationed there and miss it desperately.

Question: if you want to have useless conversations about books, art, music, where is the place to live? I come from a place where everyone has an advanced degree, but am too darn cold and depressed in the winter to join a book club or start a conversation.

I also love the outdoors, nature, my daughters' school activities, etc.

They have a literary festival here in the spring and I'm sure there are lots of clubs.
Also regarding outdoor hobbies , google National Forests In North Carolina. This should assist in your quandry. Good Luck in your endeavours!!

actually, I think at one time, the Raleigh-Durham area had the highest concentration of people with doctorate degrees in the state.

In Charlotte, there are a lot of MBAs but not so many of the nerdy types.

What did you do here that made you love it and miss it now? I really don't think you should look for somewhere to live that only has people with advanced degrees. How boring would that be if everyone was the same. You even said it yourself "useless conversations about books, art music" - heck you can get that conversation standing in a queue at the supermarket. Open yourself up and start a conversation yourself and don't worry about the type of degree somebody has - you will make friends much more easily.

Good luck with the moving etc.

A good friend of mine (who holds two advanced degrees) just retired to a new development within walking distance of Davidson College. He plans to get his intellectual fix by attending (maybe even teaching) on Davidson College campus. Would something like that appeal to you?

I've heard that NoDa is the most bohemian place in Charlotte. So if you want to have useless conversations, you can probably find them there.

I live in south park, by the southpark mall. Walkable distance to Library, Borders and Barnes&Nobles.

I think an area near Davidson college would work best. Noda and Dillworth have a lot of your artsey but it is that.. artsey.
