Hi - I am trying to understand if the airport is still expanding or has been expanded and ist using the new runway. From one map I found, it looks like the new runway is closer to i-485 than the old ones. Currently, the area west of the airport does not seem to experience the loud jet sounds due to the layout of the runway but I am not sure if this is because the runway is not being used yet. Thx!

The new runway is not being used yet. I think it's due to be complete sometime in 2010.
it will be open end of october/early november with full use by june 2010
The new runway should be called 36L/18R when it's ready for use. I think it will meet the new takeoff/ landing criteria for the Airbus 380. Lots of airports are scrambling to extend or building new runways to accommodate that airplane to bring in more business.
Yes it will be 18R/36L. The old 18R/36L is now 18C/36C. Word on the street is, once the new 18R/36L opens, 18L/36R will close due to repaving and extension. So, no forseeable ease of traffic in the near future for CLT. I had not heard about the A380, however, the problem at most airports is the space and infrastructure of the gates and terminals.

CLT is not ready for the A380. Even if we get a longer runway, the actual airport does not have the capacity nor gates to accomodate such big plane. Only JFK, ATL, BOS, MIA and a couple of more airports have made improvements to welcome the plane. Sorry CLT, but we are not that big yet.
Do any airlines that fly (or plan) to fly the 380 even fly to CLT? The only one that may be a possibility is LH, and I don't remember if they went 380 or Boeing 787. In any event, would be hard to imagine there being enough premium demand in CLT to justify the 380. It's flying routes like SYD-HKG-LHR, LAX-SYD, DXB-JFK, etc...
We're parking 340's on D terminal daily and that is the tightest gate space at CLT, especially when trying push around 60+ regional aircraft at any given time. From an engineering standpoint, it would make sense to build another (A380) plane that does not need another totally different gate configuration. However, it's a valid question, I'll check into it. As I recall, I read the A380 will require a accelerate/stop distance of over 11-12k ft? I'll go dig around and see what I can find.
So, is the LH flight to MUC a 340 in the summer, and a 330 in winter? Do you know how much of that traffic is O+D, and how much connecting?
The 340 is a weird looking plane, with its tiny engines, looks like a throwback to DC8 or 707.
