I know there are some Californians on this board... please help me figure this out.

My husband moved out to Charlotte in November and I cannot move out there until January. He was transferred by his employer and has the exact same job, exact same benefits, exact same pay. However, once he started getting paid in North Carolina his paychecks went down almost $100!!!!

How is this possible. California state income tax is 9.3% and NC is 7%. My husband has direct deposit, so we need to get hard copies before we can sit down and compare the statements.

But I'm hoping someone on this board can help shed some light?!?

We had a similar issue when we moved from SF a couple months ago. We figured out that the NC taxes default to a single taxpayer with zero dependents. He changed his status with HR to married and put in the number of dependents and now his paychecks are slightly higher than in CA. Perhaps this is your issue too! Hope that helps.
