Please understand: this means ice/freezing rain/sleet mixed with snow in our area.

The national weather service is advising to be prepared for POWER OUTAGES.

Take this seriously. Get your batteries and foods that can be eaten without heating, such as crackers, peanut butter, tuna, juice.

For newcomers: it doesn't matter if your utilities are buried. Trees knock down power lines in other areas and the grid goes down.

If the power goes off, hopefully it can be restored quickly, but it is not unusual for some areas to be without power for several days if a severe ice event occurs.

I also want to note that unfortunately with trees falling and lines down power can be out for hours and even days depending on the extent of the damage. So please be prepared.

I posted the above as we are presently under a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY right now. I will update as emergency management updates their advisories/warnings.

If you all don't have weather radios, now might be a good time to go ahead and get one.

That is so true and is the real concern with these ice events. It can take days, as you said, to have power restored, even if the weather warms up and the sun is out!

I am hoping folks will be overly cautious and make sure they are prepared. Better to be prepared with food for the children and batteries for the radio and not need them than get stuck needing food - and ice covering the streets.

Stay warm, ScreamQueen!

Time to go get supplies for my favorite Winter treat: Toilet paper sandwiches dunked in a glass of milk.

Excellent info, Nancy! That is a lot less expensive than a similar gadget I got 2 years ago. It cost right at $100 by the time I paid shipping - can be hand cranked, has a weather radio, flashlight and phone charger and a few other outlets, cigarette charger/adapter . . . I would say that is $35 very well spent. I have used mine once since getting it. Wish I had found the better priced Black n Decker.

Sleeting/freezing rain here in South Charlotte.

My cat, who usually comes in around dark, didn't come home last nite. I was up all nite - last time 4 am - trying to find him. Yes, walking up and down the street . . . I am worried sick about him. He is not chipped but has a tag with our phone number and his name. I can't believe he is out in this mess.
