The Wal-Mart at 8709 JW Clay boulevard is being sold. Does anyone know what they plan on building in its place? There is a rumor of converting the Wal-Mart site into a mall similar to South Park or Eastland. Can anyone confirm this? I would love to hear suggestions from other local residents on what they would like to see built in its place?

They aren't going to put another mall that close to Concord Mills.
Plus, if it's just the Walmart being sold then it's entirely too small for that purpose.

It would be nice to see that whole area go a little more upscale, and perhaps provide a better tie-in to the Hilton and UNCC. Some ideas:

1. A movie theater.
2. A nice night club or performing arts venue.
3. I think that area's craving a really good restaurant (preferably a seafood restaurant).
4. Maybe a live/work/shop community (like Birkdale or Baxter Village).
5. A bowling alley/pool hall.

Agreed - some good suggestions there too, but it would have to be well-planned because the last thing that area needs is a development that provides an excuse for undesireables to move in.

Currently, the Hilton/Shoppes at University area is a great family-friendly area, that IMO shouldn't be jeopardized by a 'quick buck' developer that turns the area into something completely different. That area currently has one of the most diverse crowds in all of Charlotte and I'd like it to remain that way.

They could start by designating it a superfund site.
