I am not getting a refund as I don't have enough withheld. I absolutely don't believe in giving them a free loan with my money. They already get enough of it. And yes, before anyone makes an issue of it, I do know if you don't pay enough throughout the year, they will fine you.
Get this one. I know someone who made $7000 roughly last year and paid very little in fed tax and received a couple hundred in unemployment. Well after filing and claiming a son, a compensation for unemployment (whatever that is) he is getting, get this $3000+ back. I have to own a house, pay property and real estate taxes, charitable giving, have a son, tuition for college to get the same amount back. Tell me what is wrong with the darn system??

You don't have any guilt of doing anything know. Internatly happy.
Historically, I never get a refund. No intaxication for me!! I always try to keep it as close to zero as possible and I change my withholdings throughout the year in pursuit of that goal, but usually I owe the government a few hundred dollars. THIS YEAR, I'm getting a $352 refund. I'm due for an oil change (I use fully synthetic, so it's more expensive) and a tire rotation. And I owe the state $52 on my 2009 income taxes. Whatever I have leftover will go into savings.
I already got the refund (for federal) direct deposited. NC is slower...haven't gotten it yet.
Will use the extra $$ for one month's mortgage payment (principal only) and the balance to continue to pay down my car payment from the credit line I took out (even though my car allowance covers the monthly payment, I still hate having debt).
I know, I know....the refund is a free lunch for govco. But I do like having some "forced savings" that I have th discipline to put to my largest expenses.....
It works for me and that's the most important thing....
