Alright Charlotte insiders - any ideas on neighborhoods that might fit this profile? Looking for an area with good schools, that isn't a terrible daily commute to uptown. Budget is somwhere around 425-450. I've heard Huntersville might be a possibility, but others have told me that the commute from Huntersville will be bad... Any thoughts? Other areas that might work? Thanks!

You have quite a few options, What's your idea of a decent commute?

Maybe 25 minutes? If that's unreasonable, I guess I'd be willing to put up with a longer commute, but to the extent I could keep it under 30 mins, that would be ideal...

Huntersville is 35 minutes during "rush hour" and about 20-25 minutes otherwise. Rush hour is early - if you leave Huntersville at 8:15 or 8:30, it's usually smooth sailing.

There are varying opinions on the schools in Huntersville.

South Charlotte is known for "good" schools but the south Charlotte commute can also get nasty.

Thanks for the info, that is helpful. Interesting comment on the school situation. From what I've seen, the area seems to be pretty affluent, which usually leads to above average schools, but I guess you never know.

Check out Berewick.

On your budget you can build with St Lawerence. Their homes are very nice. You could also get the best Shea home on the block I would think also.

You will have some options in your price range. Are you looking for elementary, middle or high school?

I will send you a pm with some mls numbers to check out in areas I would suggest you look.

I commuted to uptown from Huntersville I grabbed the 77x express bus. I left at 7:19 and I got off at the 3rd stop and was at my desk on the 25th floor after waiting for the elevator by 7:55 that also included me walking a block and stopping at the cafe on the corner of 2nd and Tryon to grab a coffee. I didn't consider that a bad commute.

Now I work in the Steele Creek area. I leave exit 25 at 7 am and I'm at Westinghouse and S Tryon in 30 minutes. If I hit that darn light on Norcross it's a few more minutes. I don't consider that a bad commute either.

There are homes in your price range in South Charlotte inside the 485 loop that would be a 30- 45 minute commute.

In addition to South Charlotte, you may want to consider Union County -- some really nice communities are about 4-5 miles from 485. Commute during rush hour about 40-50 minutes and off hours 20-25.
