Its just a fact. You have counties that have basically the same infrastructure today that they had 10 years ago. Same size police, fire, rescue, roads, energy, water, sewer supplies, but these places have quadrupled in population since then, as well as the needs for basic services. Obviously there will have to be additions, and this comes from money, and that comes from taxes. Or you can keep it at the same level it is now, but you will have decreased services...

Union county is having water restrictions right now. Now this is not only because of the drought, but also because of the over growth that county has seen, the county cant keep up with the supply and demand.

I hate it as much as anyone else, and Ive lived here my whole life. Its not a rural small town setting anywhere near Charlotte anymore.

Unfortunately taxes, and 'special costs', and "temporary taxes" will be the future.

Is $40 that much more a year? Not that bad to me... I mean, the money I presume would go towards the growth, no? Roads, projects? etc?

Better than paying $5047/yr for a $240K house in Ft.Lauderdale, FL like I was last year, plus $5010 for insurance a year... UGH!

CMPD can get raises every month for all I care, they are still underpaid. A shame putting your life on the line every day for $32K a yr...

Yes, and it is based on their tenure. They are still collectively paid well below the national average for police officers. They have been way underpaid for years, and the raises aren't really raises (though McCrory, City Council, and the Oberver would like you to believe they are paid fairly). There is a very good article regarding it on Crime in Charlotte, NC, but I cannot locate the exact url for it at the moment.

You also have to keep in mind, we are in a state that the cost of living is lower than other states..here in NJ, our officers well atleast in my town start at $32,000 and the cost of living is twice as high..CMPD are paid $34,000 while in school. Once you are done with the academy, you do your 3 months field training then you get your raise once you are on your own.

Look at page 3 number 139.....

I can tell you it is near impossible to raise a family, or even survive on your own on $32,000 a year.

Many police departments around here pay even less. Upper 20s. The NC State Highway Patrol starts off at $32,000 as well. But hey, its keeping everyones taxes low right?

The median income in Charlotte is 61k per year, so Cops start at half of that. Granted, most work pt off duty security, etc, it is not part of their normal pay.
