We are taking a day trip out to the beach (or could go for a nice secluded lake too) and want a place where we can let our dogs off leash. Any suggestions??

Thanks!

Our lakes dont have beaches and if they do its red clay/mud

Unless you arrive at our coast they cant be done as a day trip

but to answer your question many of the beaches in NC & SC are dog friendly
some have leash laws particularly during the summer

thanks

Up until May, dogs can be on the beach in Hilton Head. That's where we're taking ours the weekend of the 16th this month. I think there is technically a leash law, but no one bothers with it. You'll see the beach covered in dogs.

Foley Beach is good, but I think the dates you can take your dog have passed.

Oak Island, NC is very dog friendly, including lots of dog friendly vacation rentals. But the beach is an awfully long way for a daytrip.

I don't know about letting your dog off the leash but Folley beach is dog friendly. they even have a couple of places to eat where you can bring your dog. Stay away from Tybee Island they aren't dog friendly

I think the dog always has to be on a leash, and the hours are restricted during the summer, but it is a nice beach and I am going to try and go later this year.

Charleston County Parks and Recreation - Hours & Fees (http://ccprc.com/index.aspx?NID=1095 - broken link)

Folly Beach County Park

Hours
§ January & February: 10am- 5pm
§ March & April: 10am- 6pm
§ May – Labor Day, 9am – 7pm
§ September & October: 10am- 6pm
§ November & December: 10am- 5pm

An owner or person having control of any dog shall not permit the dog to be upon the public beach at any time between the hours of 10am and 6pm from May 1 through September 30 of each year. At all other times, the dog must be on a leash.

UPDATE:

More info from: http://www.follybeach.com/rules.php

Dogs are very welcome on Folly Beach! Just remember it’s a law here to keep your dog on a leash at all times. Owners are required to remove waste from the beach. From May 1st through September 30th, dogs are not allowed on the beach between 10 am and 6 pm. This law is very sensible because during those months the beach is extremely crowded during the daytime and also it’s unhealthy for dogs because of the excessive heat.

Sullivan Island also looks like a good place to take the dogs:

http://www.sullivansisland-sc.com/Files/DOGS/dog%20application%20full%20packet%20%202010%20(FIN AL%202010).pdf (broken link)

Are dogs allowed on the beach?

Yes, but all dogs must have a valid Sullivan’s Island permit – residents and visitors.

WINTER HOURS (October 1 – April 30)
Off -leash: 5:00am – 12Noon
On-leash: 12Noon -5:00am

SUMMER HOURS (May 1 – September 30)
Off-leash: 5:00am – 10:00am
No dogs on beach: 10:00am – 6:00pm
On-leash: 6:00pm – 5:00am
All dogs must be curbed. Pet waste bags may be found near the entrance of each beach access path.

We have changed the dates of our summer vacation to Hilton Head until after Labor Day. Our dog is allowed on the beach with us instead of locked up in the condo. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day dogs are not allowed on the beach between 10AM and 5pm. However after 5 it is like a large dog park. Even after Labor Day there are enough "friends" for her to run with. She has a great time and we enjoy just watching her. The beach is so large and minimal vacationers that they are generally not bothering anyone. The vast majority of the people enjoy having her "visit" them. However there is always someone who is deathly afraid of dogs, so you still have to watch them. They have to respond to your voice commands or you will be asked to leave or keep them on a leash.

We will try out Hilton Head later this year.

Our trip to Folly Beach this year with the dogs was good. Folly Beach is very dog friendly. You are supposed to keep your dog on a leash but plenty of people let them off the leash to play catch in the water. If your dogs were well behaved, not no one seemed to care if they were on a leash or not.
