I don't need adivce on where to live or anything like that.

I'm wondering if it is ok to contact someone selling their house to see if they want to rent it?

I've been searching for a rental home for the last month or so and there are significantly more homes for sale that I like than rentals I like.

Just wondering if I'd be wasting my time by asking a seller to rent their property.

for the most part, you probably are wasting your time. BUT, you never know until you ask. It is likely that sellers listed with a realtor will not be able to rent due to an exclusive sales listing, but for sale by owners will not have that issue.

The house that we are renting was for sale. We couldn't find anything that we liked, either. We put an ad out on craigslist. It just happened that the day that we did, the person purchasing the house backed out of the contract and the owners already had another house so they had to do something with this one. They just happened to go out on craigslist and see our ad. It's worth a shot. What have you got to lose? Good luck.

I would think that it would be OK to contact the listing agent... calling sellers directly is probably a bad idea.

BTW - I thought along the same lines before we got into our rental home. I even got a list of homes from a realtor that we thought would be candidates - on the market a while, lots of competition at the price point, etc. We actually turned up 1 or 2 that said they'd consider renting, but came back with VERY high prices.

So in the end I think this is a viable strategy for finding a rental home... It's just going to consume tons of time and probably end up costing you more in rent.

My friend's son did that. He just walked up and knocked on the door. The owner was happy to rent it as he had already signed a purchase contract on another home and the market is so slow. It's worth a try.
