My boyfriend and I will be moving to Charlottesville next summer. We are strongly considering buying but don't know what areas are best. We don't want to be terribly far from the hospital (UVA) b/c that is where we will both be working. Also, we have a dog, so would like somewhat of a yard, mid-priced, nice neighborhood, close to shopping/bars, but still private/detached. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Just to get an idea of what's available, you should check:

Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORSĀ® and www.realtor.com

Both will give you a look at the Charlottesville real estate market.

The Barracks Road area might be a good fit for you. There are plenty of single family detached houses. It is in a central location, easy access to 29 and not far from UVA hospital. There are also a lot of grocery stores and places to eat within a 5-10 minute drive. I don't know of any bars in the immediate area but "The Corner" is not far away.

I think that there might be some moderately priced houses around there but I haven't ever looked at buying. As a renter you can find a nice 3br with a yard in that area in the $1500-$2000 a month range.

If you are ok with living in an area that is a little more on the rural side there are some beautiful houses off of Ivy Rd going into Crozet.
