Lynchburg and Roanoke are very much traditional Virginia cities with a southern feel/vibe. Charlottesville is a liberal college town that is more similar to places like Boulder Colorado than other areas of Virginia.

Hmm... Kroger, McDonalds, Wendy's, Old Navy, Kohls, and Target. Cville has the toniest shopping, Lynchburg has the best Children's Museum, and Roanoke has the largest mountain-top star.
What Roanoke and Charlottesville both have that Lynchburg doesn't? A municipality that is encompassed by a county (Cville- Albemarle, Roanoke- Roanoke County) and great Interstate/highway access.
That being said, Lynchburg does, on occasion, get the edge on a new store or two. Applebees first location in Western Virginia was in Lynchburg, Lynchburg had the first Kohls, and Target had opened in Lynchburg years before the Target in Cville. Lynchburg has 2 Lowes and a Home Depot, while Cville still has a single Lowes. Lynchburg had Starbucks and Panera a couple of years before stores opened in Roanoke. Another interesting factoid: Hotel Rooms- 5000 in the Roanoke Valley, 3000 in Cville, 2000 in Lynchburg. Obviously, both Roanoke and Cville have more visitors!
