I think having houses close together is better for the kids, who won't need mommy and daddy to drive them to visit their friends from school. Old Trail is well lit and safe with wide sidewalks, and it's got a nice big area in the middle by the creek for kids to play ball and not have to worry about it bouncing into dangerous traffic.

"Suggestions on good vineyards and brewers in Charlottesville?"

I am going to assume you mean the Charlottesville area.
Lots of good brewers and vineyards. Drive south on 151 from Afton to Amherst and you will find easy access to many. My favorite brewer is Devils Backbone and favorite vineyard is VERITAS or Flying Fox- (it's a tie since I like wines from both.)

You can search for rentals on Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS®
Under Property search it also lists rentals.

I have one kid in Henley and it seems like a good school (have only been in the area for one year so far).
We also looked at Old Trail and I think it is a great community and very family friendly but like you say the houses are sooo close together with tiny yards and almost no privacy. We looked at beautiful houses but sitting in the backyard was almost like sitting on someone else's driveway! For that kind of money in a more rural area I personally expect more.
But people I know who live there are very happy so like always - it depends on what you and your family like :-)
