I'm moving from Philadelphia to Charlottesville this summer and have started house hunting.

Several of the properties I'm interested in are located near the railroad tracks going through town. How often do trains go through town? How loud or bothersome do people living hear the train tracks find them?

Tracks are quite busy in Charlottesville, as coal trains from WVa to Richmond run through a couple times a day. There has been some arrangement to have them not hoot their horns which is appreciated by all. We can hear the trains especially in the winter when the leaves are down - it's hard to be far from the trains anywhere in Charlottesville. Personally I am not thrilled about those tanker cars with chemicals and petroleum that are included in those long trains and would not want to live adjacent to the tracks.

I lived next to the tracks for a year and a half in Belmont. The trains would moderately vibrate the house, and you could hear a bit of chugging through the walls. I got used to it in two weeks. I personally wouldn't let it deter me from an otherwise favorable house.
