Hello,

I heard this morning on NBC 29 that there are talks of putting steps in place to make Charlottesville a "Sanctuary City" in recent light of President Trump's temporary immigration ban. What are your thoughts on this? Do you feel it would help or hurt the city? My husband and I are planning on moving to the Charlottesville area, and I'm curious to know how the local residents feel about this potentially becoming a reality. Any input is appreciated!

I am actually shocked to find out that C'Ville is not already a sanctuary city....seems right up their alley. I am not a big fan of C'Ville, though I do go there fairly often.

I'm not sure it will change anything if they pass it. There's no real immigration enforcement around the region anyway. Charlottesville & Albemarle County are heavily Democrat surrounded by a sea of mostly Republican leaning areas, most would expect that from them in Charlottesville. There are already a significant number of illegal immigrants throughout the Shenandoah Valley but most everyone handles it like an old dog, lots of barking but no bite.

Cville leaders love to take controversial stands; this isn't new, since they have served as a sanctuary for freeloaders for years. The funny thing about these grandiose political pronouncements is that they think people really care about what they say. Like jtees, I visit regularly, but would not care to live there- too much wackiness like that.

Thanks for the replies. It was helpful to get a somewhat insider's view. I don't particularly think I would want to live IN Charlottesville either - too much "city" for me, too expensive, and I actually fell in love with the Waynesboro area the last time we visited. However, I feel we would have to be somewhat close to Charlottesville, because that's where it seems that the majority of the jobs are around that area (even though they are different counties). I would be in Health Care Management, and my husband has a CDL B and works as a driver for a waste management company - so I'm not necessarily worried about refugees threatening our employment chances.

I live in Michigan and we have some areas that are not actually classified as sanctuary cities, but are known for being predominately foreign such as Hamtramck and Pontiac. Although I am not trying to stereotype, there are a higher amount of crime in those areas so I figured I would just pick the brains of the locals to get an idea of the possibility of Charlottesville becoming a sanctuary city and what the possible ramifications, if any, there would be if that passed.

Thanks for the input :-)

Crime is the concern of all that question the sanctuary city ideology.

For the life of me I can't understand the practice of letting criminals out of jail before checking a database. I can assure you LE is checking databases on you and I if we so much as get a traffic ticket. Oh well..
