I'm thinking about moving to Virginia when my husband, and I retire in a few years. I was thinking of Staunton, or somewhere similar. My daughter, and husband, and their 2 young children are also. I'm looking for somewhere with not a lot of crime, not a lot of traffic, and has great mountain views, but we'll feel comfortable with financially with a retirement income. I'd also like somewhere close to shopping, hospitals, and good schools. We will be traveling down there the first week in July. What are some fun things to do for young children, and adults? We are from Buffalo N.Y., and want a safer environment, but still close to amenities. Winters are harsh up here, but we do enjoy the 4 seasons especially fall. What areas have less natural disasters down there? That is a big concern for us also.

My wife and I are also heading to the Staunton area the second week of July. It seems many, including ourselves, are looking for similar things.

After being in Jacksonville for 4 years after having lived in CT all our lives it will be interesting to note the differences ...and enjoy some cooler weather.

Default update?

Hello, I live on Long Island and considering a pre-retirement move to Virginia or North Carolina in the near future. Just started looking on-line for any forums that might be helpful and found City-Data, just registered today. I was curious to know how your research is going and if you had any advise. I'm looking for something similar minus the kids (grown, though very well may follow,) and also considering a golf property. Most importantly though is the community!! Appreciate your feedback.

You might check out other college towns also (besides Charlottesville) as they tend to have the amenities you're looking for. I'd recommend Blacksburg, Radford and Harrisonburg.

Just my personal opinion....the correct answer is NOT C'Ville. I agree on the suggestion of Harrisonburg. I was seriously thinking of a move from NY (LI) to C'Ville in the last couple of years, but the more I went the more I just didn't like it. I found it generally unfriendly, too much homeless, people with mental problems living on the streets. I see the same people now that I saw a few years ago....so nothing is being done about it (and how is that helping them????). I've been to C'Ville about 10 times over four years...so I actually do have a clue what I am talking about. Also, very expensive in comparison to most other VA places with the exception of the DC suburbs. Good luck.

I'm also considering Staunton. But have also included Lexington and Waynesboro in my search.
