Riding up to Charlottesville this weekend on my bike. Any scenic/specifically good routes to go from Winston-Salem, NC, north to C'Ville on Friday? Same question for the return to Chapel Hill on Sunday. I've heard 81 has a lot of trucks, which don't bother me too much, but I'd only do it if the scenery was worth it.

85N to US29 to Cville. Probably faster than using I81 and certainly more scenic/less stressful.

Return- 29S to Danville, Rt86 south to Hillsborough and then Chapel Hill.

You want scenic, head over to the Blue Ridge Parkway

81 is both full of trucks and very dangerous. BRP or US 29 much lighter traffic and good scenery.

I'd want to take US 311 to US 220 to the Blue Ridge Pkwy and ride that up to Afton, cut over to Cville on US 250. It's a scenic ride but not very fast. I'd take 29 if you want to get up there more quickly, still some hills and trees to see.

Coming south, 29 to NC 86 works, or take I-64 east a few miles to US 15 south and take that all the way down til you hit I-85 near Durham.

Did you make the ride? I went out yesterday and planned on doing the Blue Ridge Pkway from Waynesboro but was so beaten up by the wind I had to turn around and go home. 4 hours of nearly being blown over was no fun.
