Was wondering how bad commute from small town about 20 minutes south of Harrisonburg to Charlottesville would be. Considering moving out that way living in a relatives house so paying no rent and commuting or what other kinds of job in area for someone who currently has their insurance licenses. Or is Harrisonburg area big enough their will be jobs that I wouldn't have to commute so far for

Harrisonburg is larger than Charlottesville, though its metro a bit smaller. You might even have better job opportunities Harrisonburg simply because it has more diverse economy. I think pay tends to be lower in areas not called Charlottesville.

Cville: 150% the density level; 50K people 10.x square miles vs 53k people 17.x square miles
Cville Metro: 225K people; Hburg metro: 130K people

Cville Income stats(2010):The median income for a household in the city was $44,535, and the median income for a family was $63,934. The per capita income for the city was $26,049. About 10.5% of families and 27.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.8% of those under age 18 and 7.9% of those age 65 or over.

Harrisonburg Income Stats(2010):The median income for a household in the city was $37,850, and for a family was $53,642. The per capita income for the city was $16,992. About 11.5% of families and 31.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.6% of those under age 18 and 9.5% of those age 65 or over.

Should I keep going about schools and job market? They're not even close.. Harrisonburg has made huge strides in the last few decades, but it's still a teacher's college on the edge of a cow town (and smells it too). As for our Lynchburg homer that feels it necessary to chime in on all threads not related to his bible-college town, here's some fun stats for him:

Population (city): 80,212... in 49.x Square miles. Density is 1.5k..lol
Population (metro): Lol, it includes 4 giant counties and 2 independent cities. 2170 square miles to 16xx square miles and they net a total of 35k more. Impressive.
Lynchburg Income: The median income for a household in the city was $32,234, and the median income for a family was $40,844. Males had a median income of $31,390 versus $22,431 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,263. About 12.3% of families and 15.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.4% of those under age 18 and 10.7% of those age 65 or over.

Thank you for confirming my post. What we might conclude is that areas the state or fed heavily invests in seem to outperform those that are not. Good thing that money goes far in Lynchburg!

Commuting from Harrisonburg to Charlottesville involves getting over the mountains one way or the other which can cause delays in adverse weather (storms, fog, freezing precipitation). However it will be absolutely beautiful scenery.
