My wife and I are moving to Charlottesville in Aug., and we're wondering which neighborhood would be a good choice for us. We like cities and dislike the suburbs. Is there a hip part of town--grad students and young faculty mingling at cafes and bistros?

I guess you would like northern part of the downtown area. Charlottesville is not that big. If you like to live in cities, you need to be close to downtown. Southern part is a bit rough. Off route 250, there are couple nice areas. Houses are smaller and probably older than other suburban areas, but it seems they are close-knit and friendly. It's also safe and schools are pretty good. Good luck on your career and new life in Charlottesville. My husband has been with UVA for 9 years, and we are ready for the next stage of our life and will move to LA (UCLA) this August.

"grad students and young faculty mingling at cafes and bistros?" You basically have two locations for this: the corner and the downtown mall area. Sounds like you will enjoy the North Downtown area. I have friends who live in the North Downtown neighborhood and they love to take the 5-10 minute walk to near by restaurants, etc. NDRA | North Downtown Residents Association
