Yikes. NO,...Cville is not racist. Cville is pretty liberal regarding such things, partly due to the presence of UVA which offers alot of divisity, both racially and socially.
Like most cities though, as soon as you get 20minutes outside of the area VA gets rural pretty quick,....and "some" of the small, old, conservative towns 'can' be a bit prejudiced.

Richmond? Its about an hour from Cville, depending on 'where' in Richmond,....

Cville is nice. The downtown mall is quite fun,...and there is also urban-strip-mall-sprawl areas as well.

Good luck

Agrred. Charlottesville is a progressive sort of place in my opinion. It has a sizable African population and Richmond is very close. I like Cville.

On a statewide level, you won't find any of the stereotypes until you get into the southwest panhandle area, or the extreme western VA highlands. Considering segregation actually happened here I feel the state has come a long way. I wasn't even alive during those years and I find it hard to believe it even existed. Unfortunately racism is everyehere, but I don't think Virginia is any more racist than, say, New York or Massachusettes.

Default Bi-Racial couple acceptance

I just found this question and wanted to ask if we (my husband and I) would encounter any "in your face" racism in Charlottesville. We will be retiring in a few years from FL and are scouting around now for prospects. Am really considering Marquette, mi but charlottesville caught my eye also. Does it get really hot there and I guess the main issue I have other than racism is "are there lizards there"? I hate, hate, hate those things and truth be told that is why I am leaving the south. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. By the way, we love the cold and snow so extreme winters aren't a problem. Are there any beaches close by or large lakes or rivers.

Charlottesville is not racist. Not at all, from my experience. Everyone hangs out with everyone, regardless of race.

I just moved here and I am African-American and my hubby is Puertorican, I too have small children. My experience so far has bee ok, I have gotten some nasty stares but that may be b/c of my interracial relationship? Not sure but so far no blatant racism. We just moved from augusta, ga so it is a big difference for us but so far so good, I think I really like it, oh yeah and I'm originally from Arkansas so...can't get worse than that.....lol!

Hello Myra & Loulou,

I'm a Hispanic Mom of 4 school aged kids and my husband is white. We moved to the Shenandoah Valley area (30 min west of C'ville) 4 years ago from FL and we had some of the same concerns regarding possible prejudice, just based on some rumors and some things online, etc.
Our experience here has been wonderful. Everyone we've met has been very welcoming and just in our small neighborhood is a huge mix of cultures and backgrounds.

We travel to Charlottesville mainly for shopping (houses were way out of our price range there)or for the occasional event at the John Paul Jones Arena and I have always felt safe and comfortable. I think because it is a college town there is a very diverse population there.
I feel very confident in telling you to put those concerns aside and come check out this unique area of VA.

LOL, we hated them too...and those darn red ants! You will not find either here, walk barefoot in the grass with no fears!
The Summers get hot and the Winters get cold and just when you can't take anymore heat or cold the beautiful Spring and Fall seasons arrive. It took about 2 years after we moved from FL to really get adjusted to the cold but now we can go out in 50 degree weather with no jacket and be comfortable. Last winters snow were the most we've experienced since moving here but were still not as bad as further north.

The closest beaches would be about 2 hours away on the east coast. We actually go to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and have it enjoyed it as much as we did the Central FL beaches.

HTH and good luck to both of you!
