My wife and I will be driving north to Baltimore in a few weeks, and I plan to spend the night in Chattanooga. I've loved NC/TN style pulled pork barbecue for most of my life, but down here in Louisiana we just can't get the stuff. (They think like Texans that barbecue is a piece of beef that you drown in a sauce.)

I've made this trip by car dozens of times, but have always arrived in Chattanooga far too late to be hunting for the good stuff, but this time I plan to arrive just after rush hour.

So, let's hear from you folks. Who has the best pulled pork barbecue within 50 miles of the city? Thanks for your help.

Talking Good B'BQ in Tennessee

We literally just got back from Chattanooga and we had a great experience at the Rib and Loin on E. Brainerd Road near the new Walmart (not too far off 75). Food was delicious, had great rustic charm, service was excellent and prices were great value.

To Rosinante,

Forget all the above (especially Sticky Fingers, avoid any "chains" while in Chattanooga).

Go to Sportsmans Bar-B-Q, at the foot of Signal Mountain.

Address: 231 Signal Mountain Road, Chattanooga, TN 37405

Search for reviews of this restaurant on the major search engines. Many overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Started in the late 1940's (still the same family overseeing the bar-b-q), somewhat of a "hole in the wall" place, delicious food.

There was a place around Brainerd that advertised "1-800-OINK" on a big billboard...it had wonderful 'Q. Maybe somebody knows if it's still there.

drfranklin,

You're my kinda guy since I'm not into chain restaurant food (although chain BBQ would be better than none at all). In fact, since you've come to the rescue, I guess I'll stop for the night in Chattanooga, instead of truckin' on to Athens as I had been thinking. That'll give me another shot at some more good pulled pork before I hit the VA line.

Southlander: I'll be looking for the billboard, but unless it's visible from I-75 I'll probably miss it.

I'll be taking my Coleman with me to bring some home on the way back.

Sportsman's BBQ is good, I had forgotten about that lil place. Sticky fingers has a nice variety (dry and wet ribs) and Buck's has a great stuffed potato if you want to hang out downtown. Hard choice I think!

Porkers is the place to go. IIRC it is on Market Street. It was even a place that George W went to several months ago

The "1-800-oink" place is Rib & Loin on Brainerd Rd. My favorite in town! If you like sweet tea...it's great there too!
