There a multiple parts and zip codes around Chatt that are good places to live; There are areas our company can no longer service due to the violent experinces, aggetations, damage to our fleet trucks and attempted truck equipment and parts theft while on a job attempting to perform repair services for customers in Zip codes 37402,3,4,6,7,8,10,11; and there are issolated places and subcommunties w/in these listed zips that are OK by day but still close enough for five finger discounters walking around the block.
There are only a couple of wrecker services that will even go into these zips many have already had to adopt the policy of contacting the police for escort services to the scene. Now the local police say they are not security firms and don't have time watch every contractor, wrecker, or service agent in bad areas of chattanooga.

Go west Young man!!! just kidding just get outside the boundries of Chatt, go country and you'll be fine.

Sorry to step in since I don't live in Chattanooga, but just as a consideration:

Some areas of the country and some cities and towns have "bad" areas that when you're in them, day or night, you just KNOW they're bad. But there are plenty of areas around some other areas down here that during the day may look like regular areas but may be bad. Looks can be deceiving in some towns.

I live 25 miles West of Atlanta. We have a few neighborhoods around here that look perfectly fine and sleepy during the day, but they're bad areas. Likewise I remember being in Chattanooga a while back with a friend who moved up there and we drove through an area not far from downtown that looked just fine to me, but he said you couldn't GIVE him a house there. Can't remember where it was exactly as it's been a while, but the point being, don't JUST go by looks when driving around during day hours.

You're dead on Atllantagreg. There are sketchy areas downtown, parts of Brainerd, the southern end of Red Bank. The crime in Hixson seems to take place mostly at the high school, which is a complete disaster since they began busing inner city kids there around 1990. As with most cities, the majority of the violent crime occurs in the poorest urban areas.

Could this just be in the BAD parts of town or in the suburbs as well. Is shopping safe around Hamilton Mall?? We were set on a move but now we are freaked out!!! Any help from ya'll would be great!!

I've been here 15 years and will be glad to list specifics so not to be called ignorant. (Just a few)

Let's see..

The Sheriff is in jail for being a crook, and involved with cocaine.

Former Town Councilman caught in FBI sting taking bribes

3 of my neighbors homes have been robbed.

My car was stolen and recovered with broken windows.

My husband works retail and tells me about the shop lifters. Not just the customers but the employees do it too!

I used to work with a girl whose ex-husband shot her and her infant dead, then himself, on her front lawn while she was running away from him (with the baby in her arms) on Christmas morning.

My boss's front door was kicked in and her house robbed.

A previous neighbor was a policeman, he was jailed for beating his wife.

My employers vehicles have been vandalized, they cut off the catalytic converters to sell the metal inside.

I know that crime happens everywhere... no town is immune to it. I used to live up north, and when I moved here my opinion of the crime was that up north, it is the stranger that buries you in the back yard...down here it's someone you know. So I tend to agree with the other posters comment that they do it with a smile on their face.

PS - if Crack cocaine was on traded on the stock market, I would invest because it is selling like hotcakes!!
