My family is considering a move from Alabama to the Chattanooga area. We've visited South Pittsburg, Jasper, Hixson, and Soddy Daisy. We need a good school system because my three are spread across elementary, middle, and high schools. We want a "down home" feel but not too rural or not too many rednecks. Think "Doc Hollywood" or "Sweet Home Alabama" meets "Runaway Bride" (with Julia Roberts). Family friendly, hospitable, community events, etc. We would prefer to buy land and build a house, but we do want nice neighbors close by. Any advice on the outskirts of Chattanooga would be great. Please bear in mind that I will have to drive into Chattanooga to work for the money I need to stay on budget. Thanks so much.

Signal Mtn and Soddy are very good options.

We went to Soddy Daisy, but we didn't see much off of the main road. Is there a lot of non-riverfront property available to build on? Do you know anything about East Ridge property?

There a ton of land that is non lake front. The problem is finding reasonably priced waterfront.

Yes, I do know about East Ridge. If you are looking for land that's not the place.

I really appreciate that information. Can you give me your opinion of the South Pittsburg or Jasper area (maybe even New Hope)? My concern is finding my children in the backyard with a bear. I may be looking too far out. We are two families looking for about five acres that we can subdivide and live on side by side. My family would just like one acre and my sister's family wants 3 or 4 acres.

Jasper / S Pitts is a small, quiet, affordable towns. I'm sure you could find what you are looking for land wise there. I'm not sure you would find what you are looking for in the "things to do" category. Also, do your research on the schools.

As far as I know the bears are in the Chilhowee area of Bradley Co (Ocoee River area). I don't think I've ever heard or a bear in Marion Co. I do hear they have cougars .
