i am a contractor and will be retiring in the next 4 years and thinking hard about chattanooga, i was wondering if there is an area where i might be able to create my own loft space in an existing structure.

Downtown and the Southside of Chattanooga are your best bets.

There are a few buildings that seem to be ready for someone to take and develop. Riverview is right, mainly on the Southside. It is one of the housing types oddly missing from downtown. There seems to be only the Market Street lofts, and we hope someone does something before we move there, too.

You can probably get money / loans / grants from different public, private, and foundations around town. They love to see folks reworking our inner city and downtown.
