Hi - and thanks in advance to what I've seen is a really helpful community ... I hope you can give us some advice. We're moving back to the southern mountains, wanting to rent for a year while we look for a house to buy. Our necessary things are organic food and mountains ... then, as little humidity as possible BUT warmer winters. Does anyone have any ideas? I saw that Chattanooga has 2 organic markets - Cleveland has 1. Are we limited by wanting to rent in the mountains? We'd like to be no more than 20-30 minutes from the organics. Thanks so much!

Thumbs up Chattanooga, Farmers mkt, Williams Island

..M.R. : Chattanooga has a recent upswing in all types of health markets... With all our exercise races here , large supply of athletes.. Here is a brief LINK that pops up for some of the organics..
WILLIAMS island may be a interest to ya.. On Sunday near the Finley football stadium is the pavilion market with live music.. Links - Main Street Farmers Market
Some of the super markets would be Whole Foods, which was the old GreenLife name, on the North Shore .., a ENZO market on Main street...... ALDI (Discount) on Rt #153 Hixson near the RUSH Golds Gym...
. Up on the plateau will be a tad cooler in the summer you asked for , or swim in a shady creek coming off the plateau. Another LINK with ten sites.. https://local.yahoo.com/TN/Chattanoo...+Organic+Foods

Thanks Split - that opens up a big area. Where is the plateau you speak of? Is it in the town or up more in the mountains?

It's the Cumberland Plateau. The part located closest to Chattanooga is called "Waldens Ridge". It is directly west of the city. Lookout Mountain and Signal Mountain are both on the plateau and are within 10 minutes of downtown. The plateau stretches about 70 miles to the north past Chattanooga.

The tops of the plateaus can look very similar to the valleys below but have measurable differences in climate albeit slight compared to the true mountains of the blue ridge and Appalachians to the East. The Cumberland Plateau is very unique geologically. There are many pockets of "mountainous" terrain, mainly the steep transitions from valley floor to plateau rim. Chattanooga largely occupies the TN valley that lie between these contrasting geologic formations and the city is closer to the plateau side than the mtns. Signal, Lookout and Racoon Mtns are burbs of nooga that are on the closest part of the plateau to the city.

If organic food is your only other criteria, most southern cities have at least one supermarket to fill those needs. Chattanooga stands a bit apart from the rest for their reputation of quality famers markets. The Tn valley in particular has an extraordinary past of ancient farming, treasured for its fertile soil. William's Island is an excellent example of these two subjects coming together.
