Hi

We were looking for land near Chattanooga as investment / retirement prospect. We came across a development in Signal Mountain City but in Sequatchie county. It is by Taft Hwy 127 , about mid way between Dunlap and Signal Mountain Town.

When I look at Signal Mountain City website, the boundary is only within Hamilton County. There is no mention of city limits.

The homes that are built there have address as Signal Mountain, TX 37377 but in Seuqatchie County.
The zip code 37377 shows a vast boundary
Zip Code 37377, Signal Mountain, Tennessee Zip Code Boundary Map (TN)

But looks like City doesnt acknowledge the rest of area? as per website The Town of Signal Mountain it only talks about the town.

I am not sure what this means. can someone explain how this works. i am confused. what will be pros and cons on being in such a place that appears to be split between 2 counties and common city.

Thanks
~P

I know nothing of the area, but not uncommon for mail address to be from a post office in a different county than the one you live in.

Very common in a rural area for a small town post office to serve areas WAAAAY outside the town limits. I grew up in rural Mississippi with an address of a tiny town in a different county. That tiny post office actually served parts of three counties.

It would make perfect sense for an address on top of the mountain to be served through the Signal Mountain post office instead of the Dunlap post office. Otherwise the mail trucks would have to climb up and down the mountain every day.

And for what it's worth, it isn't just a county line... it's a time zone boundary. Sequatchie is in Central Time, Hamilton is in Eastern Time. Your phone will bounce back and forth depending on which tower you're connecting to unless you lock it to one or the other.

Wow... that's something I didn't know. Any insights on living in Signal Mountain but on Sequatchie County?
