Well the cold and snow of Central/WNY has pushed me to take a serious look at Chattanooga. I'd be looking to buy a home in a "safe" area that has reasonable access to amenities and transportation like cab/uber. EPB fiber a must as well. No school age kids so school district not an issue. I'd buy the worst house in a decent area as long as I felt safe and didn't have to worry about people not coming over because of the area I chose to live in.

I keep seeing St. Elmo coming up as an area to consider. Would an area east of Forest Hills Cemetary and south of 38th street be considered safe or a no go?

Input and questions appreciated.

Thank you.

That area, known as Alton Park, is definitely a no-go. While it is much better than it was years ago, it is still a crime-ridden neighborhood. Just a couple days ago there was a shooting on the 200 block of W 38th St.

Well that rules that area out. Thank you for the information and clarifying the neighborhood name.

I wonder if it's going to be possible to purchase a reasonbly priced home in the area.

Well, depends on what you consider reasonably priced and what amenities you desire.

I plan on purchasing and curious if I'm not being realistic for the area at say $100,00 to $120,000 - whether a fixer or just minor stuff needed. I've been actively looking at the real estate listings too but that doesn't get a definitive feel for an area. Outside of personal safety, access to cab/uber and EPB fiber are near the top. This would be a complete lifestyle change for me and looking to jump in.

Any thoughts on Red Bank or Hixon area? I just found a couple of places that need work at around $100000.

Thanks

Red Bank and Hixson are mostly ok. Not to say there aren't some problems, but much less of the drive-by shootings kind of issues.

Thank you again for the reply. Thoughts on the area near Brainerd Rd and Germantown Rd?
