My boyfriend and I will be hitting the road with our four cats next month to move to Chattanooga. Our friend just bought a house on the border of the Orchard Knob/Highland Park area(which he is going to fix up) and we are going to move in with him. We are both very, very excited because we are both tired of the West Coast(it's getting too expensive) and we have business opportunities in Chattanooga that we don't have here.

We are both ex-punks approaching 40 so we are a bit strange yet accepting. I am related to general U.S. Grant and my great,great,etc... grandfather marched with Sherman through the South. I shouldn't mention that when I move there. Right?

Welcome to Chattanooga. You can mention anything you want here. You may be mentioning it to a native or a transplant; either way I doubt that they will be highly impressed one way or the other. You will find most folks here polite and unassuming. People here can be judgmental but they keep that to themselves and their closest friends. Let us know if we can answer any questions for you about the area.

Thank you for the welcome. I'm used to passive agressive behaviour, it's pretty rampant here as well.

Question about humidity. I lived in DC for one year. Is the humidity in Chattanooga as bad as there?

I don't think it is as bad as DC. There are times that it gets bad according to locals, but perhaps it is similar since both DC and Chatty are near water. Overall I think you will like the Chatty weather better. Weather.com or something similar might have historical humidity levels.

In Olympia it gets humid, and rains, all of the time since it's near a rain forest, but it's a cold humid. I think only once or twice in the summer does it get hot humid here. DC, on the other hand, was humid the ENTIRE summer. I can handle it but my boyfriend has never lived in a hot humid area of the country before. I am going to go on that site and look up humidity levels.

EDIT: Just found out that Olympia is the most humid city in the US. LOL!!! I guess being in cold humid weather instead of the hot variety makes the difference.

I grew up here but lived near Seattle for a couple of years, and am also an "ex-punk" (depending on your standards, I guess). Chattanooga's a great place to live and has a very distinct flavor--I think you could easily find yourself fitting into the culture here. One of my favorite aspects of Chattanooga is the free concerts in the smallish downtown every Friday night through the summer. The beer's expensive, but the music can be great. Living near Highland Park you'll be a very short drive from there.

The humidity can be terrible, honestly. Sometimes I even miss the drizzle from the northwest/Seattle area...

Are there any good punk bands in the area?
