Yah, I think I would agree not to keep a cottonmouth as a pet, yikes!

Here is some other info on the cottonmouth from wiki. It doesn't show it's region as eastern Tennessee, at all. You may not have a cottonmouth, but don't reach down into that bucket and discover the exception.

I agree with the others. Dont keep it as a pet unless youre well versed in keeping venomous snakes (which its readily apparent that youre not). Let it go, get the poor thing out of the bucket ASAP. Release it near a pond that isnt frequented by people too much.

Default Anyone know what snake this is?

Hi everyone,

I saw this snake and I was wondering if someone here knew what snake it is. Someone told me it was a viper. Any ideas?

Thank you...

If its black its probably a rat snake and will not harm your dog if it bites her. Its attracted to rats and will return to the woods when the weather gets wormer.

Interesting we never heard from the guy with the cottonmouth. And why in the world are people with little knowledge of snakes putting them in buckets and glass jars? Snakes are generally peaceful, interesting and beneficial creatures. If you don't know what it is, for heavens sakes leave it alone. Get a dog or a cat.

To the OP

Moth balls should help if you put them around the house/around the property. Be warned they STINK.

If you put poison out, you run the risk of poisioning your own dog, not to mention other birds and harmless wildlife. I do live on a horse farm and I hardly ever have snakes. I contribute that to having barn cats. Its not that the cats get them, they just seem to steer clear of cats and don't come around. Before I had the cats, I had more snakes than I care to think about. Get kitties and be sure to keep your lawn mowed down so you can see them easily!
