My wife and I will be visiting Chattanooga next week to look at property. I will also be interviewing for a position. Assumming that I receive an offer, I will be working at the main Erlanger campus.
We would like some property somewhere in ( or very near to) the mountains and are not at all familar with what our options are(looking at 1-2 acres). Initially, I thought we needed to look to the East of the city, but my potential employer recommended that I also look at the Lookout Mountain areas etc.
I am used to driving 30 -45 minutes each way now and since I will be working "off normal" hours am not too concerned about the traffic.
We certainly would appreciate any and all advice from anyone who has been there done that etc.

Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob - hope your interview goes well. I know it sounds exciting to look for property from the start, but I highly recommend you consider renting for 6-12 months. This will give you & the wife to get the lay of the land and gain a better understanding of the surrounding areas.

You may settle on the recommendation of others only to discover that you'd love to own something in another area.

You should get some feedback here, but nothing beats firsthand experience.

Bob,
Tri-Dads advice is right on. We've lived in Tn. for the last 3 years and in the last 6 months finally knew where our niche was. Renting first is a good thing to do since Tn. is so big and diverse and each area is very different from one another.
All the best,
Pam

You have been given great advice. Do by all means consider the traffic especially living in the mountains during winter. It would not be unusual for the mountain roads to become iced over causing you to get snowed or iced in. Lookout Mountain is way expensive. Hope you're a rich doctor.
