I'm a little nervous to pose this question, but I am going to throw it out there anyway.

Once again, I am seriously considering grad school at Lee University in Cleveland, TN. From what I have read, it sounds like the ideal place/town for me. I'm looking for a somewhat small town, super friendly people, awesome weather, and of course, a great psych program.

The thing I'm concered about is this. I've heard that Cleveland is like a mass of churches, and very conservative. I am a christian, and currently attend a non-denominational church. I'm somewhat conservative, but I do drink on occasion, go to happy hour with friends and dance on occasion as well, although horribly. Is this way too "liberal" to fit in in Cleveland?

You do know that Lee University is run by a very conservative church, right?

I would say yes... Cleveland is very small town rural South. Very conservative. And like JMT said... Lee isn't exactly "neutral"...

My husband and I LOVE going there to shop and go for "day trips"

Check out the City for yourself:

The City of Cleveland is a mini boom-town like Knoxville but on the outskirts is a little more conservative. I wouldn't be too afraid of going there but you can always plan a visit one weekend to make sure it is the right place for you.

I went to a pretty conservative, methodist school here in Seattle (Seattle Pacific University). They had the same rules that Lee has...no drinking, no dancing, etc...but graduate students and staff did not have to follow the same "guidelines" as undergrads. And, I grew up in a SUPER conservative church, so I feel like I could do that again...but I wondered if there are people like me who are kind of "middle-roaders", or if I would stick out like a sore thumb there.

I went to Lee and was honestly not even aware that there was a no dancing policy. I guess I didn't read the handbook very carefully. Based on my experience, I would think you'll be fine there as long as you do not advertise the things you do that they disagree with. I did not live on campus, so I really had no concerns with their policies.

Cleveland itself will in no way be too conservative for you as you describe yourself. I grew up there and visit my parents there fairly frequently. It is conservative compared to the larger cities, like Nashville, but you sound just like most of the people I know there. That's not to say you can't find plenty of people who are anti-drinking. I would recommend a Methodist or non-denominational church as opposed to the Church of God or Southern Baptist, if you intend to be a part of a church while in the area. :-)

Good luck with your decision!
