It looks like my girlfriend will have to do a couple years in Georgia as a teacher in order to become vested for retirement purposes.

Long story, but life circumstances forced her to move from Georgia just a bit too early.

OK, but I have no interest in working in Georgia. Therefore, one half of "us" is going to have to remain/work in Tennessee: Me!

Right now, we live in Knoxville. She is a top notch teacher here, too.

So, do any of you have any tips for this circumstance? My understanding is that this "live in Tennessee but work in Georgia" thing is fairly common down there in the Hamilton County region.

This is my first time investigating this scenario. I'm interested in any and all ideas or information regarding this.

Would it be better to live in one of the other counties along the Tennessee-Georgia border?

I get the feeling that Hamilton offers the best prospects for me to find a job (I pretty much have to remain in Tennessee because I need to continue within the Tennessee school system).

I'm also assuming that we should remain in Tennessee for tax purposes (no state income tax).

OK... enough... and ideas or suggestions?
BF

Oh, we won't be buying a home... just renting an apartment while in the Hamilton County region. So, I'd like to know of those areas that are considered most safe and problem free.

Willing to rent up to $850 monthly... no kids... just myself and the girlfriend. 2br & 1bath.. maybe 1br & 1 bath if it drops the rent way down.

[Man! I wish I would have known of this kind of forum when I moved to Knoxville a few years ago!]

OK... so... what? are you all busy watching the playoffs?

Here is a message thread from last month, on that very topic.

Working in one state and living in another is very common.
