This comparison is to make me feel better about my current car so I'll hold onto it a little longer. My first car was the 1978 Camaro with 250 CID inline 6 cylinder engine (about 4.1L). It had 110 HP and around 20 mpg hwy. the top of the line factory spec 1978 Camaro Z28 with 350 CID engine did 0-60 between 7.5 to 8.5 seconds depending on which magazine you trust and weather. That was the top of the line model. My current Malibu is 3.1L V6 with 170 HP and did 0-60 in about 8 seconds with a 4 speed auto. My Malibu also has 4 wheel independent suspension instead of rear leaf springs. It's sad that this family grocery getter is the fastest car I've ever owned, but it's no where near as cool as that Camaro even though it was slow as maple syrup in a New England winter, all four windows leaked when it rained, vinyl driver's seat cracked and torn, carpet rotted out, headliner gone, trunk leaked water, and I had only 5 out of 6 cylinders actually working.
My old 72 Mustang with the I6 and 3 spd manual also looks very good in the rear view mirror. These days it would just drive me crazy but wasn't that a great car? I know what you mean 110%
I have a 1985 Pontiac Firebird in my garage right now...it was my first car, and came equipped with a 2.8L V6 (135 hp) with a 700R4 Automatic Transmission. The car was great fun to drive, but dead slow in a straight line, 0-60 in the 10 second range, and a 18 second quarter mile around 80 mph. It wasn't a fast car, but it was great fun to drive around.
I will say that the car could return 30+ MPG routinely while I was in college. That was all highway mileage, but even still it wasn't bad. I totally understand that the old cars are cooler, and will always hold a special place to the drivers. Just like all the "cool" i feel when I go into the garage and see that black firebird out there.
My 1987 Trans Am with the 350 TPI (high tech back then) only has 225 horsepower. A '12 Impala LTZ with the 300hp V6 would likely blow the doors off of it.
Funny thing is I have a 85 Camaro z28, a 200 V6 camaro, and a 2007 Pontiac G6.
The G6 has the most hp. The '85 has 155, the '00 has 200ish, and the G6 has 224hp. At the same time the both camaros are probably faster then the G6. And teh 85 and '00 would be a close race.

Good Topic.
May 1st car, 1977 Camaro Type LT w/ a 305 V8, 135 HP.
Then a 1976 Pontiac Trans AM 455 V8 , 200 HP
1984 Mustang GT 5.0 V8 185 HP
1988 Mustang GT 5.0 V8 225 HP
My current car, a 2012 Ford Edge Sport, 3.7 V6 with 303 HP,
and would smoke all, or most of my old cars

Which is about like saying Roseanne Barr would crush Penelope Cruz at arm wrestling.
Cars from the mid to late 70's still had the looks of earlier models but unfortunately the performance was gone. I had an 84 Corvette for a while and it was a great looking car with the digital dash etc etc. But in all honestly my 2000 Pickup is faster and gets about the same mileage..
Did I mention the Vette died at 80K miles where the truck has 180K and runs like new.. We have come a long way.............
