Hi y'all. I'm considering buying a '91 Camaro with a 305 V8 and a manual transmission. The clutch is slipping, and since I'm going to use it for drag racing, I'd like to replace it with an automatic.

How much of a PITA would this conversion be?

Thanks.

It would be cheaper to find a 3rd gen F-body Hardtop (no T-top) with a L98 5.7 TPI with a blown 700R4 and begin there OP

if you revert back to non electronics it will be a breeze .. just put a big motor in with a powerglide trans and go ..

If the Op is planning to Race it best and more cost effective just find a decent used Race car/Project Car and go from there

that is true .. it will most likely already have gears ,perhaps a cage and should not cost more than a normal car ...

I don't think these cars are that hard to find, so I don't see why you would create extra work for yourself. Just find a car with an automatic.

Unless it's an incredible deal and you're anxious to take on the project, why not just start with an automatic? There's certainly no shortage of 'em.

It's easier to go from ManĂ¹al to auto. But I would look for a Z28 350 TPI. Or a auto RS. 700R4s can be bullet proofed and they are relatively cheap to rebuild these days. You'll be money and time ahead by buying a automatic. Lots of Trans Am's out there too.
If anything find a 2.8 v6 no power anything and hit the junkyard on 1/2 off days for the engine trans and siting harness and computer. Might as well get the lightest chassi you can get

It is a deal - the seller only wants $2500. That's the only reason I'm interested in this particular car.

I'm definitely open to that. Are there any sources you recommend?

That's kind of what I was thinking. Carburetor, and MSD 6Al ignition. Because I will be driving this thing to the track and back, I was thinking a 3-speed (Turbo 350) would be better than a PowerGlide.

You will need the radiator as well, Auto will need the cooling from the radiator. I guess you could do some sort of aftermarket cooling coil as well.
