2005 Buick Rainer 6 cyl AWD

I have done most of the common repairs: Rear air bags fail- I replaced with regular shocks
Blower motor probs: replaced blower moter
wheel bearings
I have done a lot of preventitive maintence.
Always oil changes:

Here is my problem.

Got in the vehicle, drove down the road- all of a sudden I notice smoke in rear view mirror-

vehicle was running 3000 rpms at 20 mph

stopped immediately

transmission fluid coming out near engine

What the heck???

No slippage- no warning signs transmission fluid was low. Check engine light had been coming on but code said it was for PVC valve.

Anyone have any idea?

Once the transmission lets go in that fashion there is no good news. It's broken and needs to be rebuilt.

Could be clutches, could be gears, could be torque converter but it's all going to need a rebuild.

The good news is that it's the 4L60E.. Just about any transmission shop probably has three of them sitting there being rebuilt at any given time. Not because they're crap.. Just because there's so many of them out there.

You'd also have no problems finding one at a junkyard if you wanted to go that route.

AZ or Aamco will check codes for free. Always check fluids manually rather than letting the idiot lights warn you. It's usually too late at that point.

How were you turning 3K @20mph? Sounds like it never shifted from 1st to 2nd. The fluid was probably good, there are a million parts inside that transmission that can/will go bad allowing the thing to let go.

Figure on $2500-$3000 if putting in a reman unit. Less for a junkyard one.
