If I were to pull the trigger on a mid 2000's model Silverado, say between 2004-2008, would you feel their standard factory stereo systems are decent enough to enjoy, or would that be something I should think about switching out?

there are much better places to get this info, but first of all the model years are from 99-06 then 07- up. 03 was the first year for a factory double din sized stereo. (its possible 02 and earlier, but you need the 03-06 dash pieces and a few other parts). Personally, no the cheap ones are not good. The upgraded ones are not bad.

OP, for $250 and much less, you can get a name brand aftermarket double DIN stereo that will fit right in the space of the factory stereo. That would be my suggestion as you gain greater functionality like the USB port that the factory stereo does not have. I have a 2004 Pontiac Grand AM and installed a Clarion double DIN stereo and I love having the USB port; I got a tiny, low profile 8 gigabyte USB storage drive and just leave it in and it's so small looks like part of the stereo.

The other good thing is those model year trucks predate when GM started using the stereo to control other functions of the car like programming the locks or setting the interior lighting, etc., so replacing the head unit should be painless.

I had forgotten that I had posted this thread! It's a good thought to look into the models that don't have the head unit running other functions of the vehicle, so that's something to keep in mind. I've been looking at the Avalanches a bit more recently as well. I'm basically down to two different wants in my next vehicle. Either a mustang GT and an older Chevy truck to haul things, or a good condition Chevy truck (Silverado or Avalanche) as my daily driver and find a cheap Mustang as a project car that I can restore over time. Right now, I'm leaning more toward the latter, simply because it would be nice to have something that I can haul the whole family in, but the stereo needs to sound nice and I would like to have the USB and Bluetooth options in an aftermarket stereo system.

Switch out. Get a good Pioneer unit. Difference is huge. Btw, it is VERY easy self install. I owned 2000 Silvie and had head unit in and out several times. Also, upgrade door speakers. They suck bad. Plenty of room to put in some quality ones.
It's double DIN unit, btw.

Thanks! Yeah, I've seen where people have installed the big touch screen head units in the early to mid 2000's model Silverados, I would assume it's pretty much the same for the Avalanche. I'm thinking of switching my wife's head unit in her RAV4 out for something that has bluetooth for hands free.
