We have a 2007 Chevy Uplander it sputters and it smokes real bad,its started to really hurt my gas mileage. The mechanic says he thinks it could be an injector or the manifold gasket...he pulled the mass air flow sensor out and it didn't make the car stall which its supposed to. It started a few weeks after we bought the vehicle in August and its gotten worse since then. At times it gets surges of power and then it will go back to sputtering. Its got reduced power etc. We thought it was the head gasket going at first but he pulled the only spark plug that it's throwing code for #5 and it was completely dry and didn't smell like gas etc. We have changed all plugs and wires...he was wondering also if it could be the coil pack....I just want to narrow it down because its driving me crazy.

I'd start with the process of elimination, do a compression check

Only because you did not list the mileage and it's a 2007

The first thing to look for is if there is a Chrysler logo on the front.

If this is present, replace van.

OP: Check to see if Code P0300 "Random Multiple Misfire" is present.

Did alllllllll this with my Chevy Blazer . Turns out.. Low compression on one cylinder. Needed engine replaces. Never did.

That truck got junked, unfortunately........................

I doubt that someone on a forum who has never seen your van can diagnose the problem better than your mechanic. There could be many causes, and good diagnostic equipment is needed to identify the problem, otherwise you are just wasting money throwing parts at it hoping to guess.
