My husband and I are looking to buy our first home and we've been considering Bloomingdale since it's central to expressways and it's between both of our works. It seems like Bloomingdale has more available and affordable townhomes than other areas we considered (Lombard, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn). We are looking to spend around $150k.

I've never been to Bloomingdale and was wondering what it's like to live there. Is it quiet? Is it safe? Are there areas we should stay away from? Is there a downtown area? Are the schools good? Are there plenty of restaurants/grocery stores, etc? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Bloomingdale is nice, stay away from Glendale Heights. I don't know what you'll get for that price though.. Schools are good, so is shopping etc

So stay away from the area that borders Glendale Heights? What's wrong with Glendale Heights?

Nothing unless you consider less expensive homes bad. The working class have to live somewhere.

Default Carol Stream is good, too

We just moved to Carol Stream about a year and a half ago, still love it. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, though: $150k will not buy you much at all here, even Glendale Heights (which is also ok, too, know people that live there and like it just fine). To get a decent house or even townhouse for that matter, you will need to consider at minimum $180-$200k range, and at that, you will most likely be getting a "fixer-upper" or tiny nice home (we were in same situation as you price-wise, and had to adjust up to compensate for area). Best of luck, let us know if we can help you! Also, yes, Bloomingdale is very good, but way out of that price range. It has no real downtown, but for some reason the affluent gravitate to it. CS and GH are working class, also lacking downtowns, but still good places to live. There are plenty of grocery stores, shoppping, etc--we like the mall here (Stratford Square). Plenty of restaurants, too--probably too many for our good, that's for sure lol!
