You should be able to find places for far less in Evanston easily. If need be, you can move to Lake View or something in the city and take the Purple Line Express to Evanston.

Is there a Salvation Army, Goodwill and St Vincent de Paul in Chicagoland? Once upon a time I was able to get all types of household items there, but that was long ago,

Yep, there are Salvation Army Stores, Goodwill, St. Vincent DePaul and plenty of resale shops in the Chicago area. Certainly, you can find good used furniture at various stores. There used to be a thrift shop on Chicago avenue and Kedzie in Evanston that had furniture, but I don't know if that is still there.

There are some rental furniture places as well, but I would think those would not be the greatest bargain.

Just be careful with used furniture that you do not bring Bed-bugs or other insects into your house. Also pet dander can be an issue if you suffer from allergies. Between IKEA and inexpensive stores like Ashley, is it being penny wise or dollar foolish?? I would not bring used upholstered furniture into my home unless I knew the previous owners and could be certain the used pieces were truly clean.

Lived in both. Taxes are higher in Evanston if you are buying, but apartment rentals were just as expensive if not more so.

You get what you pay for. Cheap over-priced furnitire that is staged on a showroom floor is nothing mpre tham eye-candy with a short life. It is like mobile home carpet. Its worn out in 6 months. I did that with waterbed row. If something looks too good to be true it probably is.
