I amfrom Chicagoland area and now livein SW florida- and boy do I miss home! I'd have to say Lyons, Riverside, Brookfield, Berwyn, Broadview for proximity to the city (you mighteven find some deals in the South suburbs especially if schools are not an issue but I know NOTHING about them. Maybe someone else can chime in?

Thanks all...I am pretty much sold on the Western burbs. My sister has a co worker who may know of an awesome rental in Lyons coming available in the Spring. There may also be a rent to own available to us right next door to my little brother in Brookfield. We are going to do some serious networking when we go home for Christmas.
Namomof3...My siblings have told me to avoid Berwyn and Broadview, but the others are great. I have a brother in Brookfield, a brother in Lyons, a sister in La Grange Park, and a sister in Westchester, so I think the West is for me. LOL. By the way, how do you like SW FL?
On another note, I certainly did not mean to discredit any mini van driving folks with my comment about the lack of pick up trucks...I spent almost all of June visiting my family and saw very few larger pick up trucks on the road. What I saw instead were the ugly, utilitarian cargo vans with a rack on the top. Speaking of trucks, is anyone familiar with the process of a winterizing a diesel? Apparently it has to have a cord that goes from somewhere near the oil pan and plugs into an outlet and helps with cold starts in the winter and fuel turning to gel. Is this an absolute necessity with a diesel or is this intended for an even colder climate like MN?

Brookfield and Lyons are great suggestions. I'd also throw in Countryside as well and maybe even parts of Willow Springs if you can find a rental in your price range.

I don't think you need the car plug-in thing here. On really cold nights he may have to let the truck run for several minutes every few hours though. I think those are more common in Canada and farther North areas of Minnesota and the UP.

If you are looking for the small town semi rural life w/very affordable housing, look at Cary & Fox River Grove. Housing market has collapsed in Cary and many fine looking homes are available to rent. Plenty of trucks too!

Default Chummy has a sick sense of humor...

The odds of finding some Irish surnames in the towns listed goes back to reason that the planation in GoneWith The Wind had an Irish name, catch my drift?

I also live in SW Florida and am thinking about moving to Chicago (where I grew up). Don't take the suggestion about Harvey, Phoenix, etc. seriously. Though I must admit, these days those areas probably aren't much worse than Lehigh Acres has become.

Sounds like the poster already knows the area well, or at least can speak directly with 3 people who do. This whole thread is moot. Hence, my post.

Are you Irish Chummy? If so your biting sarcasm is giving it away.

Actually I started this thread because my siblings were not certain about the truck restrictions. I also asked the same questions of all mys siblings and cousins in the area and could not get a straight answer about where to live, only where not to live.
