Where in ND are you moving from? Some nice towns up your way.

Most suburbs are in fact quite safe. You need to narrow your specs down if you want any concrete answers.

If you're coming from ND, you might find the existence of crime in even the safer Chicago suburbs a little scary.. Good luck!

Your best bet is to find as lily-white a neighborhood as you can afford to buy into, even if you have to settle for tiny living quarters. The darker the neighborhood, the higher the crime rate. Republican voting precincts are safer than Democrat voting precincts. Look at demographic maps of the area and the demographics of the school your chldren are zoned to attend. Choose those with the highest white/asian enrollement. Avoid black/hispanic areas characterized by the single-family, low-IQ, fatherless gang culture. Call the police department and ask them for neighborhood crime stats. Better yet, if you really want to be safe, stay in North Dakota. You'll probably end up with the same disposable income you have in ND once you factor in the higher cost of Chicago safe housing, crime prevention, transportation costs back to ND to visit the family, car repairs resulting from more long distance travel, psychological counseling to deal with the fallout of living in a hostile environment, the increased likelihood of divorce due to elevated stress levels, and the higher income tax bracket you will probably be in. Good luck!

Just what our forum needs more of. (Sarcasm)

In spite of the racial and voting demographic of the area, you would be VERY safe if you chose to move to Homewood or Flossmoor.

Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn,Wheaton are all desirable suburbs with all any family could want and they are all by Lombard, which in itself might be the right choice. I dont know why you would want to venture all the way down to the South Side(Homewood,Flossmoor) for a long commute if you are working in Lombard by suburbs that have always been top choices.
