So, I recently had some mold remediated from our 70s-built home (leaky window) and the guy told me our wall construction was done on the cheap.

Where normally it would go: siding, tyvek, wood, drywall, in our house it goes: siding, tyvek, some sort of cardboard like substitute, drywall.

Additionally...

1. That's not uncommon for cheaper construction from the 70s to today.

2. It's impossible to tell if the house your buying has it.

3. That he personally would never want to live in a house that had that.

Just trying to educate myself on this issue, and trying to find some balance between "it's no big deal" and "run like hell".

Any informed opinions on the matter?

Greatly appreciated,

- CS

If you had remedidation, you probably had a Mold inspection. We did too - before we purchased. The environmentaiist who did the test was also licensed to inspect houses. When he was a teenager he started building houses with his father. If you find someone like this, or someone likehim in the building trades that has been around for 40 years they can probably answer your questions.

There is a thin insulation that is sold in sheets, but I don't know how long it has been on the market.

Thanks for the info.

Though, I see now how my post was confusing.

I'm wondering if the cardboard-like substitute for wood in the walls is common and/or a big deal.

Any insights on that?

I'm not sure about the answers to your questions, but you may want to also try posting in the real estate forum. People there may have a better idea about what that is they used in your house.
