I am about to move to Chicago with my family; husband, two children 3 and 4 years old. My husband will work for a company in Vernon Hills. It would be nice to live close to his office, but more importantly a safe suburb for our kids.

We will probably not spend more than 400K on a house.

Close to a lake will be a huge plus since we love boating (and planning on bringing the one we have).

Please help! I don't know where to start!
Thank you.

With that budget and job location vernon hills itself likely would be just what you are looking for.

Default You might also look a bit further afield...

$400k goes a little further than it did a few years back, so you might scope out Deerfield, Highland Park, maybe pockets of Lake Bluff and Libertyville. Vernon Hills is OK, but with large parts of town having too many overly dense town homes you might want to aim for a nicer town...

There are a lot of lake front properties in the nearby suburbs, Grayslake is one that comes to mind. You could certainly get a great home there for that kind of money although as with most of Lake County, the property taxes will hit you hard.

Do not spend up to the max of your budget. Leave a little room for something else. Vernon Hills is a good suburb. There are plenty of shopping centers with stores and the Westfield Mall. Also look in newer areas of Mundelein. Grayslake is a good choice too.

Buffalo Grove is worth considering. Quality of schools is top notch (in Lake Co. portion of village), good park district and lots of families. Close to work.

Might have trouble finding a house on that budget in Lake County Buffalo Grove unless a townhouse.

Not true, found numerous listings under $400K, north of Lake Cook Rd.

Not with lake rights though. Plus the OP didn't mention what property taxes are like where they're coming from. That budget might change!
