Hello,

We are planning on installing a fence on our property in the next month or so. I have been researching what is the best wood to use and western red cedar keeps popping up as the best wood that lasts. Has anyone recently gone through this process recently that cares to share any tips or pointers on what to look out for, what not to do, what is the best wood, or care to share any good companies to use in the chicagoland area? We are moving to La Grange area if that helps any....thank you in advance!

You can call up a few local companies and see what they have to offer, but red ceder is bar none the best wood you can use.

We used "Cedar Rustic" and they did a great job. After getting 3 or 4 quotes all of the fence outfits were pretty close in their price for the cedar fence we wanted. They use western red for the pickets and another cedar for the posts or vice versa, can't remember. It looks great and we get tons of compliments on the fence. After a few months to let it dry out I stained it with Cabot brand stain (natural clear).
If you plan to stain it use a paint roller (4") and a brush for touch ups. any more questions P.M. me.
