Well, here's one reason to be concerned...

Waukegan robbery spike follows seasonal pattern - Lake County News-Sun

It's not just a spike in robberies. It's a guy driving around with a shotgun looking for people to rob. Yes, I know it can happen anywhere. But do you honestly believes this happens in Glen Ellyn?

Comparing Lake Bluff to Waukegan is apples to oranges - no where near the same animal!

I love it here and wouldn't consider leaving if it weren't for a job relocation. In fact, I would even put my child in Waukegan Schools (and not just their magnet schools). The negative image of Waukegan is 30% reality and 70% ignorance and fear in my opinion.
I think overall Waukegan is a good investment.
Its greatest asset is the Harbor.
The Downtown and Lakefront of Waukegan has had some
improvements of late. The New revamped Gennessee theatre (spelling)
that Tall building downtown that was condoized.
It is the County Seat of Lake County.
It has Madison Ave steakhouse with a cool view of the Lake.
It does have a nice area with nice homes on Sheridan.

It does need more reinvestment. And I have seen some houses
being fixed up near downtown. Which I think is the best area
to buy in for investing in the future.

Sure it has plenty of rough patches, but I have always
found Waukegan to be a very interesting nice place to hangout.
Nice Beach too which you can get into occasionally
without paying for it! Like late in the season or like April.

This post has to be a joke. Who goes to the Waukegan chemical plant beach, not too mention going in April? Waukegan is the hood people.

Nah its not a joke.
I think its cool.
I go to LakeBluff Beach too.
Thats why I keep my driver license
with the LakeBluff address.
To get past the gatekeepers there.

There was a very nice day this past April
where it was 60 degrees or so.

Waukegan is not strictly hood.
North Chicago is hood.
Some of Waukegan is hood.

Shockingly I like to go to
Illinois Beach State Park sometimes too.

Great article. What you fail to mention is that even with this so called 'spike' the number or robberies in 2010 is still down compared to 2009. Also, clearly the cops (and the concerned citizens of Waukegan) did their job and caught the guy.

This incident, and others like it are NOT every day occurrences in Waukegan. It's attitudes like yours and others that help to perpetuate that stereo type.

Why do criminals target Waukegan? No idea. Maybe because we have a high percentage of illegals who won't want to contact the police? Could be. Maybe because we have a higher percentage of workers who get their paychecks cashed at Check n Go type establishments (ie don't have bank accounts) so they are more likely to have $ on them? Which, in turn, means that businesses are more likely to have large amounts of cash - which tends to lead to more business robberies? I don't know, just some thoughts.

Hmm a town that has a high percentage of illegals and a high percentage of people that don't have/use bank accounts. You're doing a great job selling it.

Exactly! There are parts that are BAD - and there are parts that aren't.

Please don't tell me you'd call Chicago (the city proper) the 'hood' just because of the rougher neighborhoods on the south & west side. That's just ridiculous.

True, true, but as "thatgirl2478" pointed out, there are parts of Chicago's south & west sides that make Waukegan look like Disneyland. Other than select pockets, it's not a super dangerous town. It's gotta be safer than Cicero even (a town with somewhat similar demographics but much closer to the city).
